We all know that marketing has become more challenging. With all our fancy tactics to reach people, the magic formula may be as simple as honesty — an authentic and honest conversation.

Social Media Marketing is just that. It's finding your audience and instead of telling them to buy your product, you ask questions and are genuinely interested in their answers. It's listening, offering help, advice, and information with no sales pitch or strings attached.

So how does having a chat get me business? Well, to begin with I don't know of a brand that wouldn't want to be thought of as personable and helpful. Second, it's an opportunity to offer up your expertise as THE subject matter expert. And lastly, its not exactly private since its a conversation that hundreds or even thousands of people listen in on, and because it's on the web, it can be viewed over and over again for years.

Social media allows companies to put on a human face, enhance their brand image and get honest information about their category, brand and competitors that they can't get elsewhere and at a fraction of the cost of focus groups.

Social Media is not without pitfalls though. While the cost of media is almost non-existant, it requires strategic planning, conent development, training for inhouse participants and lots of time in order to be successful.
